Having a Snack at the RV and Camping Show

One of the sellers had a kids table and chairs set up. They are intended for kids to sit at while the parents are haggling over the price of a camper they like, but we happily made use of it for a snack and break. Patrick was happy looking around at all the campers until I asked if he wanted a snack — he realized just how hungry he was and gobbled down the whole bag of goldfish crackers.

Immediately behind Patrick is the kid carrier I brought along to carry a few things as well as him when he got tired. He didn’t sit in it once, and was in fact vehement that he would not sit in it at all. Had I known he wouldn’t sit in it and would walk almost the whole time, I would have brought along a smaller backpack.

Patrick and I went to the Springfield RV, Camping, and Outdoor Show today. We inspected the outside of lots of campers, noted how many wheels they had, and looked inside a few of them. This fifth wheel camper had a nice set of chairs in it that Patrick wanted to sit on, so I asked somebody to snap a photo of us.

Horizontal Star Trails

I’ve shot plenty of star photos and have made quite a few star trail photos, but I enjoy seeing the varied result that small changes make. To make this shot a little different I just did two things: used a portrait orientation (I usually shoot in landscape orientation) and I pointed the camera as far away from Polaris, the north star, as I could. The result is fairly straight star trails (as opposed to arcs or circles) running roughly horizontally through the frame (as opposed to diagonally). I also used a larger aperture to see some more stars, which has made a lot of trails. Quite a few satellites, too: along the bottom there are several repeated lines, presumably from a single satellite circling the earth a few times.

Last night while racing I got a piece of carpet wrapped around one of the axles of my Traxxas Slash 4x4. I took the wheel off to pull out the string of carpet and noticed that there was an awful lot of play in the hub carrier. Upon closer inspection the axle was freely moving in the hub carrier and I realized the bearings were simply gone! I pulled out the pieces of both the inner and out bearings in the hub carrier (yes, both bearings were destroyed), and this is all that was left.

Pro-Line Bow Ties on Split Six Beadlocks

For Christmas Sherree got me two sets of Pro-Line Bow Tie tires and Split Six beadlock rims for my Traxxas Slash 4x4. The tires came right away, but the rims were on backorder for quite a while. They’re finally here, though, with tires mounted and on the Slash, ready for some racing!

I have been running the stock Slash tires since I started racing. I have been putting traction goop on them to help soften them, and that’s made a big difference by giving quite a bit more traction when running on the track. Somebody let me try a pair of aftermarket tires one day, and I was amazed at what a difference it was — much more traction than the Slash tires had (even with the traction goop on them). Even “hard” aftermarket tires are a substantially softer rubber than the stock tires, and that gives them much more grip on the track. Having more traction obviously helps with acceleration when starting, but I was also surprised by how the handling changed when turning and the amount of control it gave. An excellent upgrade: with better tires I’ve been able to consistently improve in races by about two laps.

I had the idea for this photo in my head, but didn’t really execute it well. During lunch one day I set the tires on the table and used a Lumiquest Softbox III at camera left to light the Pro-Line tire in the foreground, and simply called it good enough. I should have also added a light on the right to give some rim light on the Pro-Line tire, to separate the old Slash tire in the background.
