Back in the day I had an old web site, known as The Wide World of Slack, circa 1995. (That was when words like "Internet" and "World Wide Web" were known only to computer geeks and colleges!)

Below is some of that old content, including my first 'blog entries (though it really wasn't a blog; just a web page I updated regularly) from March through May 1997.

I Bought a Camera

On Friday night I bought a camera. It's a Nikon N70 (a 35mm SLR) with a Nikkor 35-80mm zoom lens. I also got a camera strap and small bag for it. I like it a lot, it's a very nice camera. And Nikon's got a rebate going on, so I get $100 back.

On Sunday I took a roll of pictures with it and tried a bunch of different settings and all. Some of the stuff worked very well. Other stuff... well, it wasn't quite as successful. I hope to scan some of the photos I take and add them to Art by Me [a section that doesn't exist anymore].

One last thing: I'm a "beginning photographer" interested in "photography." I do not "have a camera" or "take pictures." The difference? People who "have cameras" and "take pictures" are always saying "Oh, just let me grab my camera!" Then they make you stand in some uncomfortable position again to take this snapshot. Then when you see the photo it's really bad, totally uninteresting, and makes you look like a fool.

I went with my friends Laura and Alicia. It was at the Met, a small club in Providence (Rhode Island). Somehow, Laura and Alicia convinced me to go "glam" for this show--I wore vinyl pants and this happenin' blue and silver shirt.

It was a great show. The sound system was pretty good, something I'm a little picky about. (I really don't enjoy going to the El 'n Gee because they have a terrible sound system.) Something else nice was the crowd--there were no jerks or moshers, everybody was just there groovin' to the music! I'd have to say this is probably the best concert I've been to.

Continue reading On Saturday Night I Saw Spacehog in Concert.

On Friday Night I saw Bush and Veruca Salt in Concert

On Friday night I saw Bush and Veruca Salt in concert. I went with my friends
Laura, Alicia and Matt. It was at the New Haven Coliseum (in Connecticut) and
our seats were pretty good--section 17 and close to the floor.

Veruca Salt was the opening act. They were very good, I was impressed. It
really surprised me that they didn't get the crowd moving more, though. Most
people just sat through their set like they were at the movies or something.
Louise and Nina were wearing these rather tight one piece gold outfits--they
looked very good.

This was my fourth time seeing Bush, but the first time on the Razorblade
Suitcase tour. They were also very good, but I didn't enjoy their performance as
much as the other times I've seen them. I think I wasn't as impressed with them
because of the crowd. Everybody was yelling so loud that I couldn't hear the
band as well as I would have liked. And whenever the band would quiet down for
whatever reason--the end of the song, a bridge, or just screw-around time--the
crowd would get louder. There was this one chick right behind us who kept
yelling "I want to fuck you, Gavin!" Laura wanted to beat her sensless, and I
can't blame her. I think a concert is much more enjoyable when you hear the
band, not the crowd. Besides that, does this chick really think Gavin can hear
her or cares about her? Please...

Why am I Writing this on a Friday Night?

Why am I writing this on a Friday night? Isn't Friday night the night that everybody goes out and stuff?...

Why am I writing this on a Friday night? Isn't Friday night the night that everybody goes out and stuff? Yeah, it is, but see, I have no life. Atleast, I don't think I do. I've talked with a lot of people about this, and I've come to an interesting conclusion: nobody has a life--or atleast, not what I consider a life.

I think all the media sensationalism has gotten to me--all those made-for-TV movies and stuff. There was a movie about some thieves who's heist went wrong, and they ended up taking a houseful of teenage girls hostage. Or how about any of the 10 million natural disaster movies? You don't even need to look to movies for excitement: Sienfeld, the show about nothing, always has something terribly interesting going on: remember the episode about the "astronaut pen," the one that could write upside-down?

None of this stuff has ever happened to me. Therefore I have no life. Warped thinking, eh?

I don't have much that's purple, though. I've got a few purple shirts; a purple, black and flourescent yellow windbreaker; a purple and black hat; and a purple suit. Yes, a purple suit.

Some Things Really Annoy Me

One of these things is everyone's tendency to state the obvious. After I read all of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books I understood this. The character Ford Prefect, an alien come to do research on the Earth, notices this. At one point, he complains about our tendency to state the obvious: "'it's a nice day out, isn't it?,' 'Wonderful weather we're having, wouldn't you agree?' or 'We're going to die, aren't we.'" Terribly annoying, don't you think? Of course, I do this sometimes myself, but I try to avoid it.

Another thing that bothers me is people's need to talk all the time. This is another idea from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. When Ford Prefect first came down to Earth, he noticed that everyone was always talking. At first he thought this was because otherwise our jaws would freeze in place. He quickly dismissed this idea in favor of another: that if we stopped talking, our brains would actually start working. I think Ford's right.

I'm pretty much in agreement with myself that this should be organized by date. But beyond that, I have no real plans for this page.
