With the kid coming, we knew we needed somewhere else to live. We talked about moving closer to Sherree’s job, but one of the big downsides to that would be that we’d be moving out of Bristol, and away from Troop 29. I’ve been with Troop 29 since November, 2004, so there’s been a lot of time to grow tight with the adults and Scouts. It was tough telling them I was leaving, but I was sure I’d stay in contact.

A few weeks after moving, Sherree and I went back to the Troop during a meeting to catch up with everyone. I knew that they were “doing something” for us, but what I expected and what we got were two entirely different things! They roasted me!

He gave us a full explanation and even hammed-up a demonstration for us. We laughed at this so hard all week.

Since then, we’ve tried to convince Brady to re-enact the “call” for us, just so we could laugh like that again. Finally, after weeks of begging, he did it again. And we were ready: three of us pulled out our phones and recorded a video of it. Here’s mine:

At Troop 29’s end-of-year Court of Honor, a few special awards are given out. One of them is the Most Memorable Moment award. To determine the winner(s) of this award, the adults get together and talk about everything that has happened over the past year, and try to the event or activity that most deserves the award. Of course, it’s usually a funny memory.

Well, this year, Brady, Johnny, and I won this award for our recent canoeing experience. Want to know what happened? I wrote about it in Swamping the Canoe, over on Scouting Stories!

A few weeks back Sherree and I attended the Court of Honor for a new Eagle Scout in the Troop, Tyler. (Yes, another Court of Honor! Earlier this year in Troop 29 there was Peter and Drew--plus, there are more to come!)

I was asked to take some photos, so, unsurprisingly, abliged. I really need an SB-800 to be able to shoot in this church, where the backlighting is so harsh. Regardless, some photos:

On Friday evening I attended a Court of Honor for Drew, a new Eagle Scout in our Troop. I, of course, took photos.

(Actually, I went to two Eagle Courts this weekend. This one on Friday and another on Sunday, for Jeremy, a Scout from Troop 16 in Middletown, where I was an Assistant Scoutmaster and Scoutmaster for a few years. I didn't take photos and Jeremy's Court, however.)

Troop 29 does something unique to involve the Troop's Eagle Scouts: they are all responsible for pulling off the old Troop neckerchief and putting on the new Eagle neckerchief. It obviously doesn't take that many people to do it (I believe we had seven Eagles to help), but it's more about camaraderie and a welcoming ritual. There's a lot of smiling and laughter, congratulations, and patting on the shoulder. It almost says "now he's an Eagle Scout." A great tradition.

We recently attended an Eagle Scout Court of Honor for a Scout in Troop 29, Peter. I joined 29 just a few months after him. (In fact, his first campout was also where Sherree first met the Scoutmaster who I would later contact about joining the Troop.) It was great to watch him advance (as well as being able to help him with some requirements), to see him become the youngest Eagle in the Troop at 14 years, 2 months!

Oh yeah, this was also the first opportunity I had to put the new Nikon D300 to work. Most were shot at ISO 2500-6400 (without flash). I wouldn't consider these shots the best that the camera can do, however, as I was (still am!) learning how to best work the camera.

The First Aid Challenge was designed to give each Scout the opportunity to work on the first aid rank requirements they needed to complete. Fair warning: this game didn't work as smoothly or as fairly as I would have hoped. I think it's a good starting point and the Scouts enjoyed it, but it needs refinement.

This is a three-legged relay about teamwork: the Scout on the left can only use his left hand, and the Scout on the right can only use his right hand. They must work together to tie the knot.
