But for Christmas this year, my parents surprised me with a creative gift: a B & H gift card in a “camera”!

Earlier this year I purchased several of Creative Memories paper albums and made each grandma-to-be a brag book. It was a lot of fun. I adhered all of the background papers as well as the stickers/embellishments that come with the kit. I filled the first few pages with ultrasounds. The rest of the pages are left to have photos adhered after baby arrives. As well, in the inside front cover I printed a poem that I found online. For the front, I punched out letters with my Sizzix Sidekick. It took no time to put together and they both loved it!

In past posts (1, 2, 3) we have shown some creative ways that we have given gift cards. All of these past gifts were for Christmas. This summer we wanted to give a gift card for kayak rental to a couple that were getting married. It seemed like the perfect gift for outdoors-y people like them. :) But, we can’t just put a card in an envelope and be done with it- that’s not our style!

<div class="gallerycontainer<?php echo rand(1, 3); ?>">

As with others, I made a simple book out of cardstock and ribbon. I used coordinating scrapbook paper and embellishments to make it cute. It took little time and money, but makes a much bigger impact!

2008 Disney Trip Scrapbook: Part 1

As previously mentioned on this webiste, we visited Walt Disney World in 2004 (see the scrapbook). We visited again in 2008 but this time we brought Dan’s parents.

<div class="thumbnail<?php echo rand(1, 3); ?>">

Not to toot my own horn, but I think that this most recent scrapbook is awesome. Definitely my best work. I attribute this to the fact that I took notes to journal during the trip and also completed the book within a year of the vacation. In addition, I tried to go outside of my normal chronological sequencing. I wanted to group photos in certain ways that described the Disney experience. So, I came up with a list of adjectives (and some nouns) and sequenced my photos that way. This also allowed me to use several photos of the same subject but in different places in the book. I really tried to focus on journaling as well.

Back in 2004 I got Dan to agree to a trip to Walt Disney World. While in Florida we also visited WonderWorks, Sea World, and Kennedy Space Center. You can see our posts about our trip here and here.

This trip took place early in my scrapbooking days, and now that I look at the pages, I’m amazed how far I have come. There is some technique and creativity in this book, such as using color and patterns to bring the page together. However, I think that the 7x7 format and the fact that I accumulated so much embellishment “stuff” hindered me a bit. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t take a peek and maybe steal an idea or two though!

Similarly, this year we gave theater tickets to my parents (for a production of Godspell) and wanted to make it more special. At about 3:00 pm on Christmas Eve, a great idea struck me! I asked Sherree, “do we have supplies?”

The apartment complex where we live has nice patios attached to the units. Of course, if you live on the second floor, you get a balcony. This particular apartment always has lots of plants on their balcony in the summer and they decorate every year for the holidays. This particular year, they created a simple display with greens, pine cones, and fruit. I thought that it was great! It wasn’t flashy or cartoonish. There was no metallic tinsel or big blow-up decorations. Instead, it was simplistic yet still captured something about the holiday season. I liked it very much and had to take a photo of it. I don’t have the creativity or patience to recreate such a thing, but maybe this is just the decorating idea you were looking for!

As tradition (see 2006 and previous cards), I try to hand-craft my Christmas cards. Last year, I created this blue one. First, I stamped a card with a bubble-like background stamp and brushed it with metallic blue powder. Then on a light blue circle, I stamped a tree with its accompanying spiral tinsel, which I believe I embossed with silver powder. These stamps were part of a set from Stampin’ Up. I then overlayed the “ornament” with a circle cut from printed vellum. I think that the vellum was related to Disney’s Tinkerbell paper as it was supposed to be fairy dust or something like that. Lastly, I glued on a bow. Very simple- remember I was working full-time, in school full-time and getting ready for student teaching!

As previously posted, I worked for Joni’s Child Care for about 2 years (minus my student teaching time). They host several annual activities for their clients. Harvest Feast was always a lot of work, but probably my favorite of all of the special events. The week before Thanksgiving the kids would make all of the decorations and the food to host a lunch for their parents. I would suggest any day care or school participate in a similar event. The kids are extremely proud of what they do and it is definitely a time for parents to have some quality time with their son or daughter.

Keep reading for ideas. It’s been over a year, but hopefully I can remember a number of them to get you started on planning your own event.

As you can see from previous posts, we try to wrap gift certificates creatively.

I previously created a post which showcased a book I made for my Dad in order to present a gift card. Making a gift card more of a gift is something that I've done a lot over the last few years. It just makes it more fun while also allowing the recipient to still use it as they would like.

Last Christmas, we gave Dan's grandmother another gift certificate to Schwans, a company that she uses a lot to stock her freezer with yummy dinners. But, we didn't want to just give her a piece of paper. So, I made a cardboard card and Dan wrote a poem for the inside. It took little effort, but made the gift a little more extra special!

<div class="gallerycontainer<?php echo rand(1, 3); ?>">

The poem read:

Rudolph's nose is bright red,
An undecorated Christmas tree is green.
It’s hard to say--you may have liked this gift
A little more when you were a teen.
(At least, I remember adolescent Jim
As the one who licked the stroganoff pot clean.)

We know this gift isn’t too original--
For a while now, we’ve given you one each year.
But it’s something that you can use
When your stomach screams at you, “Hey! Down here!”
With a gift card to Schwann’s
You don’t even need to be a great budgeteer!

We know you like the Chicken Cordon Bleu,
though Gourmet Pretzel Twists look so very fine.
Fajitas are tasty and meatloaf is good...
There’s so many choices that we’d probably whine!
But what are we saying, this isn’t right!
With a catalog full of yummy food, you can yell out “mine all mine!”

Creatively Giving Gift Cards

I know that it's been awhile since my other posts about crafts for Christmas, but this one is the best of all of them! In recent years we have given various gift cards for different services. However, we HATE just putting a gift card in an envelope and giving it. One year I made little boxes that had stand-up stickers and cut-outs to create a little scene.

<div class="thumbnail<?php echo rand(1, 3); ?>">

This past year I wanted to give my dad a gift card to eat in one of the restaurants at Disney World because it is something that he never does for himself when he is there. So, I decided to make a little book with a story to hold the gift certificate.

Continue reading Creatively Giving Gift Cards.

I wouldn't call myself a hard-core crafter, but I do enjoy making things, especially around the holidays. Anyone who does the same knows that it takes months to make cards, gifts, and decorations. So, yes, I will post this during summer time -- we should have started by now to get everything done! (That is why craft stores have Christmas stuff in the stores right after school starts!)

Of course this year, as in last year, my very little free time is tied up with school -- papers, observations, portfolios, and the such. I know most of you out there are just as busy. So, if you are looking for your head start on Christmas crafts, find some ideas here! I will do several postings over the next few weeks of things that I have done or seen. Hope it inspires you!

I have had all of my album covers (even albums I haven't even started yet) embossed. I think that it adds something extra to your stories, and it dresses them up so your albums just aren't plain books on a shelf anymore. In the past, I have used two different scrapbook embossing companies. If you know of more, please share!

Continue reading Scrapbook Album Cover Embossing.

When people hear that I stamp, the question that I'm asked the most is how do I store everything, especially my supply of mounted stamps. If you collect mounted stamps, they are clunky and take up a lot of space. Then there's always the problem of having so many stamps, you don't even know what you have or where to find it! Are you in the same boat?
