So a few weeks ago there was an e-mail at work regarding a staff chili cook off to raise money for Relay for Life. Our school does a lot of community/charity work and I donate when I can and in areas that I think I can be most beneficial. This was one of those areas. I didn’t think that my chili making skills were advanced by any means, but I thought that I was well passed the novice stage that I would give it a whirl. I mean, it was to raise money for a good cause.

So I committed. It is probably worth noting that I have never made chili the same way twice. Every time I make chili, I “eyeball” it and throw in whatever is laying around the kitchen or that I find interesting at the grocery store/farmer’s market. I should also add that I don’t like chunks in my food, and I don’t care for beans at all. When I eat chili, I’m interested in the hamburger and tomato-based, spicy sauce in which it sits, and that’s really it.

I say “surprise” because when the flyers went out, someone stuffed one in my mailbox, so I found out about it right away.

Last weekend my mom threw me a baby shower at Chen’s Buffet in Uncasville, CT. I wanted to post that the staff was wonderful and they made the event very nice. In addition to the Chinese food, the guy (Jimmy) makes an array of balloon creatures. I took home a few balloon rocking horses as well as a balloon bouquet of flowers. He made a number of balloon fishing rods. They were all great! I’ve seen a lot of balloon animal artists, but never anything like what Jimmy can do! Be sure to check him out and order some balloon creations for your next event!

If you are not offended by candid descriptions and occasional swearing, it is a definite must read for pregnant women and soon-to-be pregnant women. Dads- it wouldn’t hurt you to read either. You will become much more sympathetic for your women and truely know how awful she is feeling and not sharing the full story with you.

This is a log of my experiences with some different recreational kayaks. They’re all fun kayaks to play in!

If these kayaks all sat side-by-side, the most obvious difference between them would be the colors, followed by length. There’s a little curve here and there that is different, but they all seem pretty similar — until you try paddling them! The differences jump right out and it becomes obvious that so many different brands and models exist to fit so many different people’s requirements.

I found this spider that had constructed a web on our back patio. I don’t know if I’ve seen one that big in a while, so I was intrigued by it. Plus, I could stop working on my unit plan and stuff that just seems boring at the moment. So, I was able to get this photo of it. Not very good, but the little booger kept running around. I have identified it as a garden spider. If I’m wrong, let me know.

I decided to go to the New Britain Youth Museum at Hungerford Park. According to the descriptions I have seen about it, the nature trails are separate from the museum and therefore free. I thought that because it was part of a youth museum, the trails would not be intense, and I was right.

On Saturday I decided to drive down to North Stonington to attend the first CT fair of the season. The weather was beautiful, and I took some pictures while there. I was surprised by how small the fair was, despite its “major fair” status. I was excited to see that the lawnmower races were going on. I sat and watched the preliminary races for a while before calling it a day. All in all, it was an ok trip, but I wouldn’t travel all the way back there next year.

Canoeing is something I’ve done for years and years, as I previously wrote. But now, kayaking has caught my interest. Last summer I had a taste of it and am looking forward to getting in more of them and finding the one that I want to own. And since I research things to death, the kayak is no different. So, this post will serve as a reference for me (and may be interesting to you, too).

Last weekend Dan and I visited East Granby and the Old New-Gate Prison. It's a very interesting place. In the 1700s, the colonists discovered copper in the area and began to mine. In the latter part of the century, they decided to build a prison and work prisoners in the mine to offset the cost of the penial system. Besides mining for copper, prisoners manufactured nails and shoes as well. Only ruins of the prison stand, but the stories remain to be told.

Last weekend we visited Mystic Seaport with my in-laws. The weather was great and we had a good time, especially since it was free to get in! They were hosting an educator’s weekend where teachers could have a complementary visit to the museum with their families. In exchange, I took some information about having field trips there. I thought that was fair! I would love to take my students there, but there are not any curriculum connections with my seventh grade class. It would work for both sixth and eighth grade in my school, so if I’m there next year, I’ll keep it in mind.

I came across an application in Facebook called Pirates. I checked it out this morning, and though it doesn’t look like something that I would play often, I went through the tutorial. The first step is that you have to list a pirate name. I was totally stumped! So, I found www.piratequiz.com. My pirate name is Captain Charity Rackham. The explanation is “Even though there’s no legal rank on a pirate ship, everyone recognizes you’re the one in charge. You have the good fortune of having a good name, since Rackham (pronounced RACKem, not rack-ham) is one of the coolest sounding surnames for a pirate. Arr!”

At last year’s Skills Showdown there was a special cooking challenge for dinner, where the food each patrol made had to be something they had never made on a campout before, and it had to be shared with the whole Troop. This activity went over so well that we decided we had to do it at this year’s Skills Weekend!

<div class="thumbnail<?php echo rand(1, 3); ?>">

At the Skills Showdown, one patrol decided to bake orange shortbread cookies with chocolate chips.
They used a small propane oven to bake them (limiting them to six cookies at a time), and they turned out so good! I’m sharing this recipe as a part of the Virtual Cookie Exchange.

They host several annual activities for their clients. Harvest Feast was always a lot of work, but probably my favorite of all of the special events. The week before Thanksgiving the kids would make all of the decorations and the food to host a lunch for their parents. I would suggest any day care or school participate in a similar event. The kids are extremely proud of what they do and it is definitely a time for parents to have some quality time with their son or daughter.

Keep reading for ideas. It’s been over a year, but hopefully I can remember a number of them to get you started on planning your own event.
