Girl Scout Sunday 2008

Girl Scout Sunday is celebrated on the Sunday during the week of March 12, the birth of Girl Scouts. The past two years our troop has participated in the service at the church that hosts us, Prospect United Methodist Church.

This year the girls read a passage that I found that I would recommend to any other troop to use. To access it, go here and scroll down to Girl Scout Sunday or Week. Choose Girl Scout Sunday Responsive Reading (.pdf). When we presented it, one of the girls read the leader part and the others took turns reading the scripture parts.

After the service, we posed with Pastor Stevens for a photo opportunity. We also had a few extra scouts join us that morning!

Selling Girl Scout Cookies

Our obligation to the council and the public every year is to provide Girl Scout cookies. Considering we only have three girls in our troop, we did not do badly this year. We had two cookie booths at Walmart, and both were in some cold and miserable weather. Here you can see Sarah and Estelle freezing and trying to stay dry.

Thinking Day 2008

Thinking Day, a Girl Scout tradition, typically is held on February 22. I don't remember the reason, but Bristol celebrated it on February 29th this year. The theme was "County Fair" and participating troops chose a state to showcase. My troop chose Pennsylvania, and thanks to the hard work of my assistant leader, it was a huge success! We showcased some artifacts/photos from Amish country, Gettysburg, and Hershey. Luke dressed up as a little Amish boy and handed out Hershey kisses in the kissing booth. He was so cute! Lastly, we had a fishing game where you had to fish out the counties to fit on a map of Pennsylvania. As always, my girls did a fantastic job!

Horsin' Around

In January, for her Silver Leadership Award one of my scouts ran a junior event that offered activities for scouts to earn the Horse Fan badge. We also invited bridging Brownies so they could have the opportunity to fulfill bridging requirements. The event was a success! The scouts who attended learned a lot about horses and horse riding. They even learned some cowboy ballads! As you can see from my clothes in the photo, I came straight from work and they threw a cowboy hat and bandana on me. What do you call that... cowboy chic or something?

Christmas '07 Photos: Our Girl Scout Tree

Our troop has voluneered to help decorate the town library for the Festival of Trees. Last year we decided to make photo ornaments of all the fun stuff we do in scouts. We even decorated the angel with her own sash. As usual, the girls had a lot of fun serving the community, and I'm so proud of everything that they do!

Light Up the Night -- Celebrating the Fight Against Breast Cancer

On Friday, September 28th, several Girl Scout troops from Bristol helped to participate in Light Up the Night, the 9th annual Illumination Under the Stars. The night included some special speakers as well as musical numbers. After the ceremony, they recognized breast cancer survivors by having the Girl Scouts give them each a flower. Everyone then walked through the luminaries after the overhead lights were turned off. As the survivors left the field, the Girl Scouts gave each one a Bottle of Hope made the scouts. A bottle of hope is a wish jar decorated with polymer clay that a breast cancer survivor had started to make while in the hospital. Her story is included in the link.

2007 Bristol Girl Scouts Service Unit Year-End Recognitions Dinner

Looking back on the holidays, Girl Scout Style

Most people realize how busy I have been the last 9 months or so. I have returned to school full time (or more) and have secured a full-time job as well. However, I still try to keep my Girl Scout troop as active as it usually is. Of course, as usual, I have not posted the photos of our events in a timely manner and I do apologize. We have been very busy, mostly with service projects including a book drive, several service unit events, and a collection of baby items to donate to newborns during Girl Scout week in celebration of its 95th anniversary.

Studio 2B Binder Insert Pages

Sherree's Girl Scout Troop is using the Studio 2B Basics binder. She had me put together some additional pages for the binder: 3 monthly calendars, a yearly calendar, and lined notes pages.

You can use these pages by downloading and printing the PDF document. The pages should be printed on a duplex printer, or first print the odd pages then print the even pages on the back side. After they're printed it's easy to fold the pages together and see how the inserts are used. Lastly just cut the pages on the crop marks and punch the holes.

Hot Dog Roast

Announcing Scouting Stories

For a while I've had the idea of creating a web site for everybody to share their Scouting Stories, and I think it's finally ready to be made public. The site is at scoutingstories.com and currently you'll find a handful of stories as well as links to other sites with some stories. You might enjoy reading and rating a few!

I'd love to see people contribute a story or a link. Stories can be any length, fact or fiction, Boy or Girl Scouting-related, and just need to be appropriate to share with young Scouts.

Enjoy, and feel free to share Scouting Stories with other people!

Spa Night

On July 24th, I had a spa night at my house for my older girl troop. We all had a good time! The girls did their nails and had homemade facials (one part yogurt to one part honey). Then they watched part of a belly dancing tape and tried to dance along.

It's All Finally Over!

All year, but in particular this spring, I've been extremely busy with Girl Scout activities. Last Tuesday was my troop's year-end ceremony that included a Court of Awards, a Bronze Award ceremony, and a Bridging ceremony. Tonight was our service unit's year end dinner. Boy do I feel relieved!

Anyway, Dan had posted the slideshow in which a lot of my troop photos are included. However, I promise that after vacation I will attempt to post my photos.

2005 Bristol Girl Scouts Service Unit Year-End Recognitions Dinner Slideshow

The Bristol Girl Scouts Service Unit asked me to put together a slideshow to play at their year-end recognitions dinner tomorrow night. A handful of people gave and sent some photos to me and I built them into a PDF slideshow (an 8.3 MB file). The slideshow is 73 "slides" and contains 152 photos. You'll probably want to download it (right-click and choose "Save As...") rather than trying to watch it over the web.

You'll need a copy of the free Adobe Reader (version 5.1 or later) to view the slideshow, if you don't already have it.

Girl Scouts visit the Wadsworth Atheneum

Today five of our Girl Scouts visited the Wadsworth Atheneum. The girls worked on their Jeweler, Art in 3-D, and Art to Wear badges. We used the art throughout the museum to compare fashion from cultures around the world and through the ages. The girls posed outside in front of some outdoor art.

Racing in the Powder Puff Derby

This year, Sherree and I decided to participate in the Powder Puff Derby (the Girl Scout equivalent of the Pinewood Derby--in fact, we even used the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby Kits). I modeled my car after Greased Lightning from the movie Grease; Sherree more-or-less followed a plan she found in a book.

We Received Some Awards

On Tuesday night was the Bristol Girl Scouts Service Unit awards dinner.

Sherree received the Leadership Development pin, given for completing training; a Silver Angel, given for volunteering for two years without a daughter in Girl Scouts; and the Outstanding Volunteer award.

I received an episodic award--a thank-you letter--for helping at the Thinking Day event. (Honestly, I don't believe I should receive an award for helping with one event. I think every parent or leader [I'm a registered leader] should be expected to help with atleast one event.)
