uiNNOVATIONS is Two Years Old

As of Sunday, our company has been around for two years! (The paperwork says that as of April 12, 2007 uiNNOVATIONS exists.)

It sort of doesn’t seem that long: I’ve been focused working only for uiNNOVATIONS full-time for about seven months (starting back in September). On the other hand, much of the previous 1-1/2 years was spent working a day job and long nights for uiNNOVATIONS.

The First Week, or So

The past week+ has been a little odd for me: I’ve only worked one job. For more than a year I worked full-time at the day job, then almost every evening and weekend I did web development. Only working one job has given me a chance to have this thing called “fun,” at least a little!

My First Day

The first day at a new job is typically filled with paperwork to fill out, meeting a bunch of people who’s names you can’t remember, and general disarray and uncertainty about specifically what you should be doing. Yesterday was my official “first day” working at home, and it was completely unlike that, in a totally wonderful way.

And it Begins!

Last week I gave a two-week notice of my resignation at my day job, but on Wednesday—when I did almost nothing—I decided to bump my leave up, and yesterday was my last day.

Today, I start my new job. I’m working full-time for a little company called uiNNOVATIONS. They apparently do web development work, specifically with Movable Type. And believe it or not, I have some experience with that stuff.

One Year, Already!

Just over a year ago Sherree and I talked about starting a business. There really wasn't anything to lose by trying it, and we might be able to grow it into something to fund a vacation or something. I didn't know where it might lead! We decided to do it and I wrote a few words asking for help coming up with a name. (Yes, exactly one year ago!) It would be another month before we filed the paperwork to formalize.

Sherree and I talked about this briefly while out for a walk last week: I simply can't express just how exciting it is that we've hit one year, and all the change that it's made in our life already!

What's With All These New Posts?

Regular readers may have noticed that over the past three weeks there's been quite a bit of new content here on danandsherree.com. Why? Last year when Sherree and I were working on a business plan, one of the things I identified as a goal was to increase posting frequency. Blogging lets me work with Movable Type as a user (rather than as a developer), and that's a really valuable tool to do things like see shortcomings that I could solve with a plugin, for example, or working with a client to find a solution to their specific needs.

So why didn't I do this when I first wrote it in the business plan? I don't know. I became busy with work for clients and writing something here became less important. The last few months have really brought on some burnout, however (hey, I am still holding down a day job in addition to uiNNOVATIONS work). So, I've been thinking more about my ultimate goals and what I was doing to meet them--and spending more time here is one of them.

I hope you'll keep reading! One of the things I struggle with is what to write about, and when. For example, I've added several movie reviews recently (Without a Paddle, Miracle, Live Free or Die Hard). Do people get sick of those? I try to keep them vague to not give away anything, but like to hit on the points I liked. At what point do you say "ugh, another?" Feedback appreciated.

Better File Uploader, One Year Later

A few days ago I realized that one year ago I released version 2.0 of the Better File Uploader plugin for Movable Type. (And, actually, that was just over a year after releasing version 1.0.) My experience with the plugin has really been exciting, and in some ways I feel like it was the tinder for the business fire.

Usually there's a small handful of people participating in the typically-Wednesday call, but on Thursday it was just Byrne and I. Shifting into Gear

It's not a dream anymore--we own a business: uiNNOVATIONS. Our web design/Movable Type start-up still has a lot of work to do--legally, we're still uiNNOVATIONS, LLC (as opposed to just uiNNOVATIONS), for example--but the LLC filing paperwork has come back. As of April 12, 2007, at 8:30 am, it exists.
