Monkeys at Typewriters

"> For quite a few years a photo of a monkey sitting in front of a typewriter has been hanging...

<div class="thumbnail<?php echo rand(1, 3); ?>">

For quite a few years a photo of a monkey sitting in front of a typewriter has been hanging in the production department at work. I see it every day walking back to my office, and it often makes me crack a smile.

One day last week when I walked in I saw the photo and it made me think, "I wonder if anybody owns that domain?" I jumped on GoDaddy to find out and, much to my surprise, nobody had taken monkeysattypewriters.com! So, I registered it. It seems like a real challenge to find a good domain name (and I think this is one) so I figured I should nab it quick before another co-worker saw the photo for the millionth time and got the same idea as me.

"Monkeys at typewriters" is often an expression used to depict the quality of writing from a magazine, book or other written language, so I thought it only made sense that Monkeys at Typewriters should be an aggregate news source (and in this case, personalized for me).

Our friend Robin just reminded me of it. Though information is scarce, it appears to be from a Japanese variety show. This is some impressive work; very low-tech with no special cameras or camera work.

On a related note, The Matrix Revolutions was released on DVD today. I'll have to pick it up later in the week to complete the trilogy!

I saw today that Creative Pro had a new article: Heavy Metal Madness: Waxing Nostalgic Over Paste-Up. The article is referencing a story that the San Francisco Chronicle recently completed paste-up of its last page, converting to a CTP (computer-to-plate) system.

I really came into the publishing world towards the end of the paste-up era when I started working at the ARRL in 1994. Computers and desktop publishing largely took over at that point but the result was outputted on photographic paper to be pasted-up on boards to be sent to the printer.

As I read the article, I clearly remembered how messy everything got when using the waxer, how high I got form the Bestine, and snapping the blades off of the Olfa knife (we used the cheapest one at the top of Figure 12). My production and graphics department coworkers remembered similar things.
